With the turn of the XIX to the XX century the old city embraces the arrival of progress and new architectural currents arrived from Europe.

The group "Nós" is born, dedicated to the promotion of the Galician language, history, ethnography, archaeology, politics... moved by their love for the land.
Architecture and knowledge cooked one of the most important historical legacies of this city, then known as "The Athens of Galicia".

Route:

  • Ourense nineteenth widening: Start of the tour in the San Lázaro Park, from the street of Paseo we will head towards the historic center of the city, some of the streets and squares of the historic center are visited to highlight the present architecture of the beginning of the 19th century, or the birth houses of relevant writers of the Galicia at the beginning of the last century. The visit ends at San Lázaro Park.

In 1920, the first issue of the Nós magazine developed by the ourensanos Vicente Risco, Otero Pedrayo, Florentino López Cuevillas, Ramón Cabanillas and other highlights of the moment of the moment as Castelao was published in Ourense.

The objective of this magazine and this group of young intellectuals was to rescue the Galician culture and put it in value from a multidisciplinary approach. They achieved such objective and the present of the Galician culture will be forever grateful.

The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in Ourense were prosperous years and years of great social, political and economic changes. Changes that will be reflected in the urban development of the city. Because of the fervent cultural activity and also for the aesthetic development that the city lives in these years, Ourense was known as "the Athens of Galicia."

Architects such as the distinguished Daniel Vázquez Gulías will leave an architectural legacy from which the city still presumes today. Others also highlight such as Manuel Condalgo or Antonio Crespo López.

This visit offers us a walk through the most beautiful architecture of the urban center, for the stories of the society of the change of the century and also for the places of birth and meeting of the members of the Nós group.
